Diplomatic relations between the Sovereign Order of Malta and the Republic of Seychelles were officially established in 1992.

Three years later, in 1995, a Cooperation Agreement in the healthcare sector was signed, marking a turning point in bilateral collaboration.

In 2001, the Grand Chancellor of the Order, Count Carlo Marullo di Condojanni, paid an official visit to the Seychelles, inaugurating the Haemodialysis Centre at the Victoria Hospital, built with the support of the Order, which also donated two ambulances to improve the country’s public health system.

In 2003, a Postal Agreement was signed, further consolidating institutional ties between the two states.

In 2006, President James Michel visited the Magistral Palace in Rome, where he met with the Grand Chancellor Jean-Pierre Mazery. Discussions focused on launching vocational training programmes for Seychellois nurses. The President expressed deep appreciation for the Order’s support, which over the years had contributed significantly to the social and medical development of Seychelles—through infrastructure projects such as the hospital pavilion in Victoria, the haemodialysis unit, and support to the Ecole Exceptionelle for disabled children and orphans.

Following the 2004 tsunami, the Order of Malta also intervened to support reconstruction and assist the affected population.

On 25 October 2010, the Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing welcomed President Michel at the Magistral Villa. During the visit, the Grand Master praised Seychelles as a model of an efficient healthcare system in a developing country and conferred on the President the Grand Cross pro Merito Melitensi – Special Class.
